It may have proven divisive among the larger gaming community, but last year’s indie hit Gone Home was nothing if not a critical darling. And now, the studio behind the experimental, narrative-driven experience is back with its next release, unveiled during The Game Awards. We don’t know what it is, but it’s called Tacoma – and it’s set in space.
Before we start assuming that the game will be a direct adaptation of the previous game taken into orbit the influences behind The Fullbright Company‘s new title seem clear enough. With Fullbright co-founder Steve Gaynor’s past work on BioShock 2, the appearance of modern architecture lifted into space is less than a shock. But exactly what story is set to be told in the environments is a secret that will likely be kept right up to release.
The developers revealed some brief information on their official blog. While Tacoma owes its name to its original Washington setting, a desire to broaden the territory of the game took it to “Lunar Transfer Station Tacoma, situated at Lagrange Point 1 between the Earth and our moon”.
The challenge with a second title is to give yourself new, big problems to solve. And for us, solving the problems of how story exploration gameplay works in microgravity, what kind of near-future timeline might lead to the existence of Tacoma Station, what this imagined place looks like, what the daily lives of its inhabitants might be like… it’s new and invigorating territory for us all to explore together as developers here at Fullbright. And we hope you’re just excited as we are to see how it all turns out!
