Nintendo Redesigning Joy-Con to Fix Connection Issue

Nintendo Redesigning Joy-Con to Fix Connection Issue

Despite the success and popularity of Nintendo’s latest system, shortly after release players started noticing connection issues with the Switch‘s left Joy-Con controller. Now, according to a new filing with the Federal Communications Commission, Nintendo seems to be finally addressing the issue by redesigning some internal parts of the Joy-Con.

Nintendo has issued numerous software fixes and firmware updates for the Switch since its launch in an attempt to fix the problem with the left Joy-Con. However, the true root of the issue lies in the placement of the antenna inside the controller and there is only so much that software updates can do to help. Therefore, the only real solution is for Nintendo to go through an internal redesign for the Joy-Con.

There still aren’t very many details about when the Joy-Con replacement will roll out, but it is reassuring to know that Nintendo is fixing the longstanding issue. When the complaints first started flowing from Nintendo’s fanbase last March about the Switch’s connectivity problem, the company issued a brief official statement saying, “The number is not significant. The total number of repair or replacement requests for Nintendo Switch, including for Joy-Con, is consistent with what we’ve seen for any new hardware Nintendo has launched.”

Nintendo has emphasized its intent for the Switch to have a long, healthy lifespan and has the numbers to back it up. The newest platform sold an impressive 15.05 million units in its first full year on the market and Nintendo predicts that 20 million units will be sold in the next year. Nintendo’s big titles such as Pokemon, Smash Brothers, and Metroid will surely help the developer reach this goal, even though their release dates remain unknown.

There is no denying the Switch’s massive popularity among the gaming community; the console has already outsold the Wii U’s lifetime sales of 13.5 million units. Such a vast player base will surely be pleased to hear that the connectivity issue with the Joy-Cons is being addressed so that they can enjoy smooth, seamless gameplay.

This year will also see a shift in Nintendo leadership when Tatsumi Kimishima will be replaced by Shuntaro Furukawa as president of the Japan-based game company. But Nintendo believes it will have a strong year, and retailers agree after seeing Nintendo hardware sales rise 44.8% in the most recent fiscal quarter.

If Nintendo can successfully redesign the interior of the Joy-Con controllers, it will be not only be ensuring another big year for the company, but also the Switch‘s long lifespan.
